INCLUDES A VISIT TO FORT AMIEL, THE BRITISH CAMP AND CEMETERY AT MOUNT PROSPECT, THE BATTLEFIELDS OF LAING'S NEK, SCHUINSHOOGTE, AND MAJUBA WITH TIME PERMITTING A VISIT TO O'NEILL'S COTTAGE 08H00 – Depart for Fort Amiel 08h15 – Arrive Fort Amiel. This is the Fort where Gen. Pomeroy Colley gathered the British Forces in January 1881. 09h00 – Depart Fort Amiel and take the old road over Schuinshoogte where you will visit the site of the Battle of Schuinshoogte fought on 8the October 1881. This is the site of the second battle of the campaign and the British “show of force” was obliged to withdraw under cover of darkness. 10h00 – depart Schuinshoogte for Mt Prospect where the British established camp and where you will find the British Cemetery and the grave of gen Colley. 11h00 – depart Mt Prospect for Laing’s Nek 11h15 – Arrive at Laing’s
Nek, however in order to get to the British monument and mass graves one
must either have a 4x4 vehicle or be prepared to make the 20min hike over
the hilltop. 12h30 – Lunch. Either a picnic lunch at the Majuba Commemorative Farm or a light lunch of homemade pie and chips at Snowy’s in Charlestown. 14h00 – Majuba Commemorative Farm. Climb Majuba. The climb up this mountain is via a very steep rough path and the climb up, walk around and listen to the story, and the climb down rarely takes less than two and a half hours. It is tiring and one must take plenty of liquid. 17h00 – Leave Majuba and time permitting and providing people are up to it we can drop in at O’Neill’s Cottage where the Peace Treaty was negotiated and signed. The round trip is around 100km with roughly 40km on dirt roads.
